Grapple Truck Inspections in Illinois

Onsite grapple truck and loader inspections for railroad maintenance operations, rail contractors and equipment dealers. The loader, grapple attachment and vehicle scopes are identified separately.

Plan the inspection for your actual equipment

A grapple truck can include a truck chassis, a mounted loader and a separate grapple attachment. SFTI reviews the actual machine and attachment configuration before quoting the inspection. For railroad work, describe the maintenance tasks, material handling and equipment configuration. Provide manufacturer identification for the loader and each attachment, and identify hi-rail equipment or other conversions where fitted. A loader inspection does not automatically include every hi-rail component or customer-specific rail requirement.

Components to discuss in the inspection scope

  • Visible boom structure, mounting connections, pins and accessible components
  • Stabilizers or outriggers and controls, where applicable
  • Visible cylinders, hoses and hydraulic connections
  • Grapple attachment, accessible connections and operating condition
  • Functional checks within the agreed scope and documented observed deficiencies

Inspection components, access and functional checks are confirmed for the model and manufacturer requirements. Send any customer-specific requirements before the appointment.

Dealers welcome

Equipment dealers can request inspections for individual units or a multi-unit inventory at a commercial yard. Send the unit list, equipment data plates, previous reports and availability windows. SFTI will confirm the inspection scope and documentation for each unit, plus scheduling and travel for the visit.

What to send for your quote

Send the truck information plus loader make, model, serial number, grapple identification and prior reports. Include photos of the mounting arrangement and data plates. Rail contractors should also send railroad/customer inspection requirements and identify any separate hi-rail scope needed. Identify any grapple saw, magnet or other attachment separately so suitability and scope can be reviewed. Stage the truck at a commercial yard or suitable laydown yard.

Work directly with the owner

The owner personally provides SFTI inspection and training services. Discuss the equipment, site arrangements and documentation directly with the person performing the work.

Is the truck’s DOT annual included?

The loader and grapple inspection is separate from the truck’s FMCSA DOT annual inspection. Request both when needed. Load testing, repairs and specialized attachment work are also reviewed separately; one equipment inspection does not automatically cover every part of the vehicle or every additional test.
